Behavior Based Safety

Behavior-Based Safety is a two-day training course that equips participants with practical knowledge and tools for understanding how human behavior influences workplace safety performance. It focuses on identifying at-risk and safe behaviors, conducting structured observations, providing constructive feedback, using behavioral data, and reinforcing actions that support a positive safety culture.

The course helps supervisors, safety personnel, OSH Committee members, and HR practitioners integrate Behavior-Based Safety processes into existing safety management systems. Its purpose is to strengthen employee participation and everyday safe decision-making while supporting—not replacing—hazard elimination, engineering controls, safe systems of work, and other established risk controls.

Policies and procedures are essential, but actual workplace performance is also shaped by habits, communication, supervision, work pressures, reinforcement, and the conditions in which employees perform their tasks. At-risk behavior may continue when it is not recognized, when feedback is unclear, or when the work system unintentionally rewards speed or convenience over safety.

A well-designed Behavior-Based Safety process gives organizations a structured and non-punitive way to observe work, understand behavioral influences, reinforce safe actions, identify barriers, and use data for improvement. This can strengthen employee engagement, supervisor coaching, reporting, and the practical implementation of the organization’s safety management system.

Upon successful completion of the course, participants should be able to:

1. Explain the principles, concepts, and appropriate role of Behavior-Based Safety in the workplace.
2. Identify behavioral and workplace-system factors that contribute to unsafe acts and incidents.
3. Conduct structured behavioral observations using clear and objective criteria.
4. Provide timely, respectful, and constructive safety feedback.
5. Develop strategies that reinforce safe behavior and reduce at-risk actions.
6. Collect, interpret, and use behavioral data without creating a blame-focused process.
7. Integrate Behavior-Based Safety activities into existing safety management systems and employee-engagement programs.

Course Requirements

• Attendance for the required course sessions
• Active participation in discussions and workshop exercises
• Completion of assigned observation, feedback, or action-planning activities
• Completion of the required knowledge assessments
• A computer, tablet, or suitable device with a stable internet connection
• Access to a microphone and camera when required by the facilitator
• Basic familiarity with workplace safety practices is recommended

Assessment and Evaluation

Participants may be evaluated through quizzes, case analyses, observation-planning exercises, feedback simulations, group activities, and a BBS implementation or improvement action plan. Evaluation will focus on the participant’s ability to identify behavioral influences, conduct objective observations, provide constructive feedback, and connect findings to appropriate safety-system improvements.

Certificate

Participants who satisfy the attendance, participation, activity, and assessment requirements will receive a Certificate of Completion from J3 Trainers & Consultants, Inc.
